November Midday Program
Separate but equal was a lot more about separation than it was about equality. In schools and communities at large, this was reflected in gross disparities that created daunting and continuing challenges for African-Americans.
Even as battles rage today about how history is presented in classrooms and what books are shelved in school libraries, Dr. Lorraine Madway will draw on the archives at the University of Alabama to reveal an inspiring story of how African-American educators and community leaders responded during the many decades of the Jim Crow era.
Dr. Madway serves as the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was graduated with a Ph.D. in History from Yale and received her MLS from Simmons Graduate School of Library & Information Science. She previously served as Curator of Special Collections and University Archivist at Wichita State University.
Archives bring history to life in unique and compelling ways. Register now to see the stories that documents, photographs, and other archived materials reveal.
