Speaker: Tim Samuelson

“A Fragile Flower in January”

Tim Samuelson, official custodian of the cultural history of the city of Chicago, will be our first dinner guest in 2012. His topic is little-known or unknown to most Chicagoans, but Tim will unfold for us the marvels of his subject, Margaret Ianelli. Margaret Inelli was a designer, a graphic artist, a painter and a book illustrator.  She was partner with, the wife of, and usually overshadowed by her designer and scultpor husband, Alfonso Ianelli.  Alfonso came to Chicago when Frank Lloyd Wright recognized his talent as a sculptor and hired him to work on Wright's Hyde Park project, Midway Gardens.  From that time, architecture was always part of his work. The Ianelli's eventually established a studio in Park Ridge. It become a locus for American Modernism and a cultural incubator. Margaret was at the center of it all.

Samuelson's interest in history was nurtured while working - in nhis teenage years - for several northside used and antiquarian bookshops.

Union League, 65 W. Jackson, Chicago. Timing: spirits at 5:00, dinner at 6:00, program at 7:30.
